Southampton brick “arts and crafts” style homes date as far back as 1905. Expanded housing styles like Neo-Tudor and Foursquare bungalows has made this neighborhood popular among young families.  Southampton also boasts one of the lowest crime rates in the city.

Southampton also has a strong sense of community. Both churches and neighborhood bars can be found throughout the neighborhood, and yet their coexistence feels natural and picturesque—both being great places to get to know your neighbors.

The brick “arts and crafts” homes were constructed primarily in the 1930′s, Original residents say this type of home took about one year to build. Much of the original tract of land part of the Decker Farm was developed by the Merchantile Trust Company.

Mr. Sihrett supervised the building of the Subdivision and named it “Southampton” after a town in his native England. Many other streets in Southampton are also named after towns in England: Nottingham, Hampton, Devonshire, Lansdowne, Murdoch, Sutherland, Brannon and Macklind.

Early Southampton residents carried water to their homes from a spring at Nottingham and Kingshighway until a water main was constructed.

On the Southwest border of the city, Southampton keeps its own neighborhood conveniences while still being close to downtown.  

The Southampton Neighborhood is a peaceful, charming 1-square mile neighborhood of tree-lined streets featuring a variety of housing styles, friendly plant-filled porches, art glass and hardwood floors.

Daily errands can all be done within the comfort of Southampton. The neighborhood houses more than 150 businesses with a variety of services within the Macklind Avenue Business District. 

The SOHA Studio and Gallery is on display for neighborhood art admirers, along with a number of neighborhood venues and community events.

Southampton is also close to St. Louis attractions like Grant’s Farm and the Jefferson Museum of History.

Southampton is part of the St. Louis City School District. There is a good balance of both public and private schools in the neighborhood.

Southampton has received multiple grants to develop green space within the neighborhood. In the meantime, residents take full advantage of Forest Park just north of Hampton Avenue.
